Imaginative Contemplation

Mark 10:42-45

Jesus called his disciples to him and said to them: ‘You know that among the pagans their so-called rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. This is not to happen among you. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave to all. For the Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

Imaginative Contemplation

Let’s begin by taking three slow deep breaths – on the first breath think of something key that makes you you. On the second, think about what you are grateful for. On the third breath, think of a challenge or a question you have. Now start
You have just heard the gospel. I want you to close your eyes and try and imagine yourself as being in the story. Be yourself but see yourself as part of the story.
James and John. Did you already know this or did it come as a surprise. They both roll up to Jesus and ask for the key positions in the powerful kingdom that surely Jesus is about to create. James and John have set the tongues of the other disciples wagging. How do you feel? What do you say?
Then Jesus comments on authority and being the boss! Greatness equals service. You have heard of servant leadership. Some wonder if it will ever take off. Sacrificing oneself for others. How do you feel about leading without recognition, praise, honour and position.
Talk to one of the other disciples – describe the conversation…
Think about your own situation. Ask Jesus how he thinks that would work for you. What would be the benefits. What about the obstacles?
What does Jesus say to you specifically?
Think about these ideas. Wrap them up and hold on to them as your return to your present…
